[ her laugh is a little embarrassed this time, and she's even reaching over to tap her fingers on the water bottle, like maybe he forgot he was holding onto it ]

[ He shakes the water bottle before taking another swig. ]

What happens at a party stays at the party, Nance. That's the law.

[ In part because how do you even explain it beyond "we were drunk"? But he also knows the power that a mystery has. And it's much better to leave her wondering than to just shrug his shoulders. ]

[ oh yes, super mysterious. much intrigue. wow. she glances his way for a moment, ends up smiling again ]

[ she peeks, way too fast to notice anything, especially because she's busy trying to read street signs ]

Nnnope, nope, still there. You really did get it everywhere, Steve.

[ Nope, too drunk to deal with this. He huffs, lowering his hand and leaning against the window again. ]

Can't help but notice that we're still lost.

We are not, we're going back the way we came because of that one wrong turn I told you about before. Lost implies that I have no idea where we are.

[ she rolls her shoulders, squinting at the next street sign that goes by and deciding it's not one worth turning onto ]

[ He rolls his head back over to stare at her dubiously. ]

I really don't appreciate your lack of faith in me right now.

[ maybe this is why nancy wheeler never drives herself anywhere ]

Hah! There, see? Pinewood Drive.

[ she has no recollection of pineview drive, but she's turning down it like she might ]

[ There isn't an ounce of belief in his voice. ]

What do you mean "uh-huh"? We just passed the sign.

[ god, drunk steve is almost worse than mike. almost.

there's a pause, a little longer than a short pause, but not too long. y'know. a pause. ]

It wasn't bullshit, by the way. What I said. I really meant it.

[ god. for his own sanity, it has to be — at least, in this moment, where he's incapable of fronting in any meaningful way. ]

[ It's said with a shrug as he stares out the window, the same dubious "uh-huh" that he'd said only moments ago. ]

[ He rolls his head back over to stare dead-eyed at her, as if to say, "I'm drunk as hell and I smell like cinnamon, what do you want from me?"

. . . which he would say if the aforementioned things weren't an issue. The former more than the latter. ]

[ he's deadpanning her, she can tell. she knows what that look feels like. so when she actually looks over and sees that she's right, she ends up giving him a smile. but like, one of those sassy ones she sure he doesn't miss at all. even if she is genuinely amused, she's still got the sass-smile on

but once she's facing forward again, she just barely catches the wording on another street sign, and she sucks in a breath ]

--Howard! Howard Street. Hold on- [ she iiiiiiiis making an illegal u-turn in the middle of the street now, yes. it's like 2am. nobody's on the road. and she doesn't want to miss that turn. she knows that turn! ] We are so not lost. We're maybe twenty minutes from your house, right? Howard Street. Go figure. [ said like streets just come and go as they please, and this one happened to show up at the right time. ]

. . . You know my house was fifteen minutes away from Cindy's, right?

[ They are so lost and he knows it. ]

Remember when I said "you're being very annoying"? I'd say I'm impressed but your commitment to that, but.

[ she is not. and she definitely speeds up when they're at cindy's street again, where the party is still bumpin', and rushing to go the opposite direction from that turn she made before. ]

[ As they pass Cindy's house, Steve rolls down the window and leans over, sort of shouting in a slurred manner. ]

Hey Cindyyyyyyy!

Ugh.

[ nancy has literally nothing against nancy except for the fact that she threw a party that steve went to and probably had fun at.

that makes her kind of a jerk, doesn't it? whatever.

they're zoomin' on by like it ain't no thing ]

She's not that bad.

[ Just. Well, vapid. As most of the Hawkins party crowd tends to be. ]

I'm sure she's great.

[ she doesn't know if he'll remember her "i'm trying to be nice but it's hard" tone, but that's the tone ]
